Physics and Branches of Physics

The study of physics has been divided into some branches for simplicity. When it comes to studying the relation between matter and energy in our universe the most exciting tool is Physics. From a very small particle-like atom to a very large system like a galaxy and space between them, it is Physics which helps us to understand all of the aspects through which we can observe, analyse, and understand and hence the conclusions about the functioning of events around us.

Based on different phenomena and the relation between the events we can form branches of physics to have a better understanding.

To cover our course of O Level or IGCSE, we will study

General PhysicsHydraulic system to help lift weight

In general physics, we study

  • The events and phenomena that surround us and happen in our daily life
  • The thing is as a layman we just see these events and the past us unfocused we don’t see them scientifically

Example

  • Do we know the difference between speed and velocity or about acceleration?
  • When we go for a car wash let’s say, do we observe the science behind lifting a very heavy car with a simple hydraulic system?

Thermal physics  Thermal Physics is another branch of Physics

In thermal physics,

  • We learn about heat, temperature, transfer of heat and the way it gets transferred.
  • We will understand the reason behind using a radiator in a car or motorcycle engine.
  • We will discuss land breezes and sea breezes.

Example

  • We will discuss why some months like August and September are very suffocating even when the temperature is not so high like in June or even July.
  • We will also discuss how a physical state changes from one to another when we provide or take out heat.

Physics of Light and Sound  Physics and its main branches are incomplete without light and sound

In this branch of Physics,

  • we will discuss the basic properties of waves, their propagation, and their behaviour from one medium to another medium, based on different densities.
  • We will learn about mirrors and lenses.
  • We will also answer the question of why we cannot listen to a dog whistle while elephants can communicate over a long distance.

Example

  • How we can estimate the size of a baby with a big tummy?

Electricity and MagnetismElectricity and Magnetism

In this section, we will learn about

  • static charges, charges that move, and the resistance they face while their motion
  • the support they get from the potential difference
  • the energy they get refilled from a battery

Example

  • How we can use magnets and rotating coils to produce electricity
  • How much bill I will get if I use that electricity to turn on my air conditioner for 6 hours?

Nuclear Physics

Nuclear Branch of Physics

  • This part of Physics will let us understand
  • The building blocks of an atom
  • How they behave during radioactivity
  • What are the benefits and dangers of nuclear activity
  • How we can enhance its benefits while taking extra measures to avoid the danger?

Example

  • This might answer the question of why some countries have abundant nuclear power plants and why some nations are increasing their numbers.

Space Physics

Recently added the much-awaited topic of space physics. What could be more fascinating than learning about the space around you? It brings the most excitement with it maybe because we learn only the distant objects which we only see as a point in our sky. It will allow us to learn about

Space Physics

  • distant objects in our space starting from our moon and the sun
  • the sequence of planets and their basic properties
  • motion of satellite

We have many other classes and branches of Physics but here we will stick only to the topics that we have in our course of O level. Furthermore, for each of the above-mentioned classes of physics, we will have further subdivisions which we will cover as chapters of each sub-topic.
